A little bit about Jan.

My name is Jan and my passion is creating. Creating anything. I love seeing something that started out as nothing turn into a beautiful work of art. I am disabled and have a lot of free time on my hands, so I spend a lot of time on the internet. One day, while surfing the net, I ran across a digital scrapbooking site. I found it very interesting and decided to do a scrapbook for my husband that covered the forty years that we have been married. The more I did, the more interested I became. I have been blessed with an artistic talent that I inherited from my mother. I majored in fine arts and commercial art in college, but with raising a family, I never really put that talent to any good use. While doing the scrapbook, I would run across a design or element that I needed but could not find. I already had the software, so I decided to try and make my own designs. Where it went from there is evident in my first kit called “Leather and Lace,” which you can see, I got totally carried away with.

Summer Gardening Kit Freebie

Treat the Earth well. It was not given to you by your parents: it was loaned to you by your children. – Kenyan Proverb

It rained in the morning but the sun came out in the afternoon and I was taking a vacation day. My husband tilled up the garden plot while I carried all the plants from inside the house to put them in the black dirt. He wanted the plants in neat rows so I let him dig the holes and place the small plants inside them. We had a lot of tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, spinach, beans and corn. Some of the other seeds: melons, squash, beets, okra, cucumbers did not come up as well. I took two of the tomato plants and turned them upside down and placed them in some hanging baskets with a plastic bag, thick mulch, filled with dirt and hung them from a 2 sided shepherd’s hook. The weatherman says it is going to freeze this weekend and I hope he’s wrong so that we don’t have to cut up the 10 cent recyclable plastic pop bottles to use as terrariums to cover them. The gnats were all over the place biting and tickling my face and by the time it was all done we were both tired.

Earth Day Freebies

Earth Day Digital Scrapbook Freebies

At A Little Digital there are a lot of free digital scrapbook kits. They are selected randomly. Check back from time to time and you will find more. You have to log in to get them. And by logging in you can request a newsletter that will provide upcoming new kits and specials.

I think the Earth is a beautiful place and I would like to keep it that way. It takes effort and the willingness to change. For every dollar that I make on Earth Day, I will contribute 50 cents towards making environmental changes in my community.

Are Aliens Preparing Earth to Suit Their Needs?

In case you haven’t heard, global warming is a real concern. This concern is greater than drug abuse, greater than gang wars, greater than our need for a health care plan, greater than anything that has ever crossed our paths. Are you going to sit back and watch while we (the bad aliens) wait for government to do something about it?

I like to use the movie “Independence Day,” with Will Smith to hit home how well the world rallied to the defense of our planet. People were united, all working for a single cause, to annihilate the aliens. So what is it about humans that they have to wait until the last minute to take a stand and work together? Crisis management seems to be a way of life. So how do we get the masses to rally without a crisis?

I explored this possibility on a small scale by requesting a fiancee to quit smoking. He was quite convincing that he had quit. Did he? No! Just not doing it while he was around me. As for the relationship. History. And he went back to smoking. This is just a small example of “forced change.” He didn’t try to change for himself but for me. People need to rally around making the world a better place because they want a better place for their children and grandchildren.

And how many people actually want to change? They like their cars, their fancy homes, their smart clothes. When Jesus was hiring his disciples he requested only the men who could leave their families and their possessions behind. We can’t all be disciples but we can certainly help carry the torch.

If 90% of the people are more concerned about the aesthetics of whether wind turbines are going to ruin the landscape or create noise pollution does that mean the 10% of us that feel that this is justifiable have no recourse in the matter because of the ignorance of the masses? How many of these projects have been rejected by the popular vote? Upon rejection what can we do?

I recently watched a movie on the Green Planet called “The Age of Stupid” that depicted a historian from the future showing movie clips up to the demise of our planet. It was particurlary interesting how everything was tied to OIL. Americans, British, Canadians, Australians and other countries with a high demand for “things” is driving the world’s consumerism to need more oil. Oil is used in almost everything we touch.

Plastic is a by-product of oil. Environmental news from L.A. claims 6 billion plastic bags are used per year and only 5% are recycled. The rest is being burnt or placed in land fills. How much does this cost for the sanitation department? Estimates of $25 million per year.

Consider oil used for driving your car or flying in an airplane and the amount of CO2 omissions that is produced. A 300 mile trip in a medium sized passenger car produces 228.8 pounds of CO2, regardless of the number of passengers, while a commercial airline produces 404.8 pounds of CO2 per passenger. Airplanes require massive amounts of fuel. We travel because we can afford it. In poor countries, people don’t fly.

The poor countries are the countries that are being exploited. Countries in Africa where “Big Oil” is destroying their land, the water they fish in and promise to make things better and don’t. Poor countries are receiving our trash. From electronic parts, to shoes and old clothes. When was the last time you bought a new pair of shoes? And did you wear out the pair that were on your feet?

What can we do as a planet to make things better?

1. We can recycle our plastic bags, bottles, aluminum, paper and tin instead of just throwing it in the trash or burning it.

2. We can ask our employers for 4 day work weeks so that we cut down 1 day of driving and use less gas. Or if the job can be done at home, ask your employer to let you work from home.

3. We can replace all the light bulbs with efficient compact fluourescents.

4. Plant a garden. This will save money at the grocery store and make you feel good at the same time.

5. Demand that car companies produce cars that consumers can afford with no CO2 ommissions.

6. Replace heat and air conditioners with fuel efficient geo-thermal coils that run on electricity instead of gas.

7. Replace water heaters with updated energy compliant ones.

8. Vote for wind turbines and solar panels and take a stand to see that they are completed.

9. Replace windows or caulk them and reinforce with plastic sheets to keep drafts down.

10. Insulate walls and attics to make your existing air conditioner/heater use less fuel.

11. Ask yourself, “Do I need this?” when purchasing that plastic doll for your daughter that ultimately ends up in the trash.

Soccer Digital Scrapbook Freebie

This mini kit is a collection of some of the art that comes with the soccer kit. The whimsical birds are twittering fans to help cheer on the game. You can extend the birds to make more words fit on their breast. The net is a 12×12 swayed png file designed to create depth. The hexagon design came from the soccer ball and the boomerang arch that is on shoes and other logos makes up the s-shaped brown ribbon. I created a pattern from cleats and used this for the background green paper.

Including the family into your lifestyle changes will bolster your child’s interest in physical activites. Invest in a WII and play virtual games. Children tend to mirror their parents and the better examples we are of ourselves the more the children have to follow our lead. The Button Game

The Button Game

button cluster

Button Game Children’s Activity pdf.

Download and print out the coats on letter sized paper. You will need paper bags to put the buttons in. Place 10 buttons of the same color together and 6 white buttons for bag number one. For bag number two place 10 buttons of a different color and 6 white buttons together. Once you have the buttons placed on to a page, print them out. Next paste or glue them on to cardboard and cut them out. For more than 2 players, use other colors. For each bag all the buttons will need to be the same size, texture, and weight.

HOW TO PLAY: The object of the game is to see which player can put all the buttons on his coat first. After the buttons have been placed in the bag, the players take turns drawing one button from the bag. If a white button is drawn, the player puts it back into the bag and the other player takes his or her turn. The first player to button his coat with buttons is the winner.

Options: Instead of printing out the buttons consider using a penny or quarter to trace circles on to thick white paper and coloring them with crayons or pencils and cutting them out. Or you can use real buttons.

14th Anniversary Las Vegas

September 26th, 2009 by Celinda
Respond

Happy 14th Anniversary Patty & Kelly

Patty and Kelly celebrated 14 years of marriage on September 23, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was a well deserved vacation for my daughter and her family. Patty is one of the original founders of justmommies.com and they have 4 children. While there, the children played in the pool, bowled, watched a few movies and went to the Springs Preserve and played in the sand, water, a train, a big snake and climbed the rock walls. My daughter and her husband enjoyed some quality time at the casino where she enjoyed a few Mohitos
and Kelly tried his hand at the slot machines.

The scrapbook page was designed around the colors at the South Point Casino. I created a background from the hotel’s wallpaper. I used the lovebirds from the wedding kit, an ivy border from the borders kit, and I used dissolved strokes to outline the type in a bright aqua.

While I was in Nevada I rented a car and drove to Bryce Canyon to see the Hoodoos, Red Canyon and Zion National Park. Below is a photo of an Ent at Bellagios.
